Re: The Genius of Monty
It really was a bridge too far....
30 Corps took nearly 10 days to get to Eindhoven and were finally stopped 2 miles short of their objective. The Paras held out for that long despite fighting against a SS Panzer Brigade all that time. By the end there was nothing left of them.
Still the thinking behind that attack still dominates many modern attacks now. Airborne troops drop in, secure an area and land forces back them up. used a lot in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan now.
As for Monty... I don't think Market Garden was his idea... seems a bit too bold for his taste, although, in my opinion he wasn't the right choice for command for the ground troops... he was always too cautious... needed a Blood and Guts to make it happen

Re: The Genius of Monty
There is some controversy about who came up with the idea but British General Montgomery was highly in favor of it, whereas some American generals thought a more direct route into Germany was preferable.
It is not surprising that this is suppressed in the British collective consciousness as is the beating the Yanks took in their first major encounter with the Germans at Kasserine Pass is in that of the Americans.
It was uncharacteristically bold for Monty and his ordinarily cautious style was the primary source of friction between he and Patton.

Re: The Genius of Monty
I now have the sudden urge to go watch Patton. All hail George C. Scott
